Toyota slashes forecast its global auto sales

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Toyota which is battling GM for the title of the world’s largest auto makers cut its sales forecasts recently. Toyota which includes Daihatsu and Hino, now expects to sell 9.7 million cars and trucks in 2009, 700,000 fewer than its previous forecast. That is still 2.1 percent higher than the 9.5 million Toyota expects to sell this year.

Auto sales America slump to 16-year low in July

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Auto sales in America slumped to a 16-year low in July as automakers failed to keep up with consumers’ growing demand for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. While production changes may help that problem, trouble in the credit and auto leasing markets will continue to take a toll on sales. GM, Ford, Toyota and other automakers said that their U.S. sales fell by double-digits. Nissan was the only major automaker to report a gain, with truck sales up 18% thanks in part to the new Rogue crossover and a boost in incentives. Nissan’s overall sales rose 8.5%. July’s seasonally adjusted sales would be if they continued at the same pace for the full year – was 12.5 million vehicles, according to Autodata Corp. That’s down from 17 million as recently as 2005. Automakers in America expect things to get worse before they get better.

Ford looks to Europe to improve business conditions in America

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Bleeding cash and with its very survival uncertain, Ford, an icon of American auto making, will try to import some of its success from Europe. Ford reported its worst-ever quarterly loss and announced plans to bring over six small, fuel-efficient cars it makes in Europe and start selling them in North America, where Ford is losing billions on its truck-heavy lineup. The company burned through nearly $11 billion of its cash stockpile in the past year and reported in the past year and reported a second-quarter loss of $8.7 billion. Ford is trying to save itself by quickly shifting from a truck company into a car company. But the help from Europe will not arrive until 2010: It takes time to retool plants in America and importing the cars directly is too costly. Industry watchers wonder whether Ford has enough cash to survive until then. Ford has successfully sold cars in Europe for years, and it made billions of dollars selling trucks to American. But American drivers have recoiled this year from high gas prices and bolted for smaller cars. But Ford, GM and Chrysler still have to make up ground on Asian competitors who have won a lot of American car market in recent years, analysts say.
